Do I really HAVE to wash my face at night?
These days it seems everyone is so busy. There aren’t enough hours in a day to get everything done. We are so pressed for time and always on the go. By the time we settle down for the evening, we can barely keep our eyes open. So, is it ok to skip washing our face before bed? With everything we have on our plate our bedtime routine can feel more like a chore. How bad can it be to skip it once in a while anyway?
A lot of my patients have told me that since they don’t break out or have oily skin they don’t feel the need to wash their face every night. Well, I’m here to tell you that even though we are busy, and may not have visible skin issues such as acne, it is necessary to wash your face every night before bed. If you don’t, it will affect the health and the appearance of your skin and not in a good way.
I am going to explain to you the most common reasons why you need to wash your face every night. It will make you think twice before crawling into bed without taking a few minutes to wash the day away from your skin.
The first reason is to prevent premature aging of the skin – more specifically wrinkles. It doesn’t matter how young you are. Even if you don’t have a single wrinkle on your face it will catch up to you; so it’s best to get into a good routine now and not wait until the damage has been done. As we sleep, our skin repairs, renews and regenerates. For this to happen properly, our skin needs to absorb oxygen through the pores. If we don’t wash our skin our pores are blocked with makeup, dirt, oil, and dead skin cells, which makes the process almost impossible. Over time our pores become enlarged and congested with debris, depriving our skin of oxygen. This can make our skin appear dull and lifeless. Nobody wants that! Oxygen deprived skin can accelerate the breakdown of collagen as well, which leads to premature aging and wrinkles. Time already goes quickly, and we don’t want to look older than we are. It’s as simple as washing your face every night!
Who wants bacteria living on their face? I know I don’t. Think of how many times you touch your face during the day. Everything we touch carries germs and bacteria. I saw a news segment years ago about how many germs and how much bacteria are on our cell phones. After testing cells phones and toilet seats, they said our cell phones have more germs and bacteria on them than toilet seats, making them a breeding ground for illnesses. Just think of how many times we touch our cell phones and then touch our face. And to think they even touch our face when we talk on the phone…yuck! What can these germs and bacteria do to our skin? Once they get trapped in our pores, they can cause acne, rashes, and not to mention other illnesses we don’t have time for.
Another big reason to wash your face every night is to remove those ugly, damaging free radicals and environmental pollutants. We may not be able to see them, but they are there. They are in the air we breathe, on everything we touch, on our food we eat…everywhere. Throughout the day, these free radicals and pollutants attach to our skin and attack our healthy skin cells. They damage our healthy skin cells to the point of no return making us age twice as fast. Like I said above, when we sleep, our skin has the ability to renew and regenerate; but if you don’t wash your face before going to sleep, your skin doesn’t have a fighting chance. Your skin cells will be too busy fighting off the free radicals to be able to do its job of regeneration, repairing and renewal. So, what’s the best way to reduce the damage done by free radicals? Wash your face every single night. It’s that simple.
Washing your face before bed really is one of the easiest ways to keep your skin looking vibrant and healthy. Do yourself a favor and take a few minutes every night to wash your face. You will be happy you did.
