Do not buy skincare on amazon!
- Posted on: Mar 6 2017
Most people are unaware that it’s illegal for medical grade skincare, such as SkinMedica, to be sold online on any website that is not managed by a medical practice and the product distribution overseen by doctors and nurses. This means that purchasing these products online at Amazon and other sites is a huge risk to your safety and health. As more people are seeing the benefits of in-office cosmetic treatments and medical grade skincare, there are unauthorized retailers who are sadly taking advantage of profiting from this at the expense of your skin and wallet. These unauthorized products range from being expired, recalled or just plain fake. It’s one thing to make cheaper purchases online with clothing, furniture, décor, etc. (little to no risk), but don’t take the cheap route with your skin!
Unauthorized product purchases also apply to cosmeceutical products such as Image Skincare and Lira Clinical where only licensed professionals can purchase them directly from the company itself. It’s important to note that cosmeceutical and medical grade products are only designed (per the FDA) to be sold under direct supervision from your provider to ensure you are using the correct products for your skin concerns/condition, using the products correctly, and are accurately educated about the products.
Although it seems like an easy way to purchase products at cheaper prices online, the risk being taken is greater than the benefit of saving a few dollars. There are many different risks you are taking when you purchase these products on Amazon, eBay, etc. The products may be completely fake and packaged to look like our professional, medical grade products. At Always Beautiful Medspa, we have seen this first hand where our patients have innocently purchased their favorite product online, used them and experienced different results than they have in the past with the authorized product purchase. In one case, we saw a bottle that looked just like what we sell in our office but the ingredient list on the back was completely different. We’ve even seen chemical reactions when using these unauthorized products with other medical grade products! Other risks involved are these products may be expired, tampered with, stored for long periods of time, and stored in improper temperatures. Stability of these true medical grade products is imperative to their efficacy. And just because the product doesn’t burn your skin when you apply it from your online purchase doesn’t mean it isn’t fake, tampered with, or lost its effectiveness.
So, how are these products getting to Amazon? Well, that’s the scary part and all skincare companies are shutting these fake places down on a daily basis, taking the product and destroying it. It’s a huge deal that’s being managed daily by all the reputable professional and medical skincare companies. Sadly, it’s a losing battle some days as new company names pop back up the next day and therefore it’s an ongoing battle to manage. What this means is, these companies are trying to help manage your safety from those who are falsely labeling their unauthorized products being sold on Amazon and other sites.
What we are doing to help: For those of you who have been seen in our office, we offer our products online which can be reordered and shipped to your home, making maintaining consistent use of your product more convenient than coming into the office.
